AI Policy

Jurnal HAM recognizes the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies in research and scholarly publishing. The use of Generative AI is permitted in a limited capacity to support language clarity and technical efficiency, but it must not replace human critical thinking and scholarly responsibility. Authors are required to transparently disclose any substantive use of Generative AI in the preparation of manuscripts. Generative AI cannot be credited as an author, and full responsibility for the content remains with human authors. Jurnal HAM upholds the principles of academic integrity, accountability, and the protection of confidentiality and rights throughout the publication process.

This policy has been implemented progressively since 2026. Mandatory disclosure of the use of AI applies to all manuscripts submitted since July 2026.

Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Jurnal HAM recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies are increasingly integrated into research and scholarly publishing. This policy aims to ensure that Generative AI is used responsibly, transparently, and in a manner that upholds academic integrity, in line with principles developed by Committee on Publication Ethics.

1. General Principles

The use of Generative AI is permitted provided that:

  • it does not replace human critical thinking and scholarly judgment,
  • it remains under full human oversight,
  • and it complies with principles of academic integrity, transparency, and accountability.

2. Use of AI by Authors

Permissible Use (No Disclosure Required)

AI may be used for:

  • grammar and spelling checks,
  • minor improvements in readability,
  • reference formatting.

Permissible Use (Disclosure Required)

Disclosure is required when AI is used for:

  • substantive rewriting or summarization,
  • data analysis, coding, or modeling,
  • translation beyond basic language polishing,
  • literature exploration or idea generation.

Disclosure must include:

  • the name of the AI tool,
  • the purpose of its use,
  • and confirmation that all outputs were verified by the authors.

Prohibited Use

AI must not be used to:

  • generate entire or substantial portions of scholarly content without author contribution,
  • fabricate or manipulate data, results, or references,
  • produce unverified citations,
  • engage in plagiarism.

3. Authorship and Responsibility

AI cannot be listed as an author or co-author. Full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the manuscript remains with the human authors.

4. Generative AI in Images and Visual Materials

The use of Generative AI to create or alter images, figures, or illustrations is not permitted, except for minor technical adjustments that do not alter the meaning of the content. If Generative AI is part of the research methodology, it must be transparently described in a reproducible manner.

5. Confidentiality and Data Protection

Authors, reviewers, and editors must not upload:

  • unpublished manuscripts,
  • sensitive data,
  • or confidential information into third-party AI systems without adequate safeguards.

This protects:

  • peer review confidentiality,
  • intellectual property,
  • and personal or institutional data.

6. Policy for Reviewers and Editors

Reviewers and editors:

  • must not use AI for scientific evaluation or editorial decision-making,
  • must maintain strict confidentiality,
  • remain fully responsible for their assessments and decisions.

7. Integrity and Accountability

Authors are responsible for:

  • verifying all AI-assisted content,
  • ensuring the absence of bias, errors, or invalid information,
  • maintaining originality and ethical compliance.

8. Enforcement

Non-compliance may result in:

  • manuscript rejection,
  • article retraction,
  • or other actions in accordance with journal ethics policies.

9. Policy Review

This policy will be periodically reviewed and updated in response to developments in AI technology and scholarly publishing standards.
